A Comparative Study of Space-Time- Frequency Coded Systems for Broadband Channels

In recent years, there has been increased interest in spacefrequency-time (SFT) coding methodology to achieve high data rates over wideband mobile channels. This exploits bandwidth efficiency of multiple transmit and receive antennas, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation, timeand frequency-selectivity offered by high speed radio channel. In this paper we compare through simulated results the bit error rate (BER) performance of two SFT coding schemes: space-time coding (STC) with delay diversity and concatenation of space-time coding and block codes. It is shown from simulation results that the key parameters in achieving low BER is the frequency selective order in both correlated and uncorrelated fading. It is also shown that coding across the different diversities maximizes the diversity gains.
